They're Right About Me Sucking

UNDEAD AND UNDERMINED released this week, to the anticipation of some and the dismay of others. Either suits me (though, honestly, I prefer anticipation...who wouldn't?) since it's always a relief to get a book out of my brain and onto the shelves (the voices...they never ever stop! help meeeee!). And I've been keeping half an eye on reviews, and have seen pretty much what I expected. The book is selling great, and the reviews are mostly terrible.

I was expecting this because you told me it would happen. To wit: "MJ's latest book sucks rocks, so much so that I know her next book will be really really bad and really really rock-sucky." At least, according to Anonymous. And Anonymous. And Anonymous! Anonymous is everywhere, and all-powerful, and lives to review everything everywhere on the earth. And hates a) my latest books, and b) using the name on their birth certificate. Ever.

Last summer, I got tons and tons of reader mail following UNDEAD AND UNFINISHED. It was a mixed bag: a) awesome turn for the series; I was starting to get a little stale on Betsy, so great job! b) my God, you get paid for this shit? c) not sure about the new direction, but will hang in there to see what you do next. Also, where can I get the shoes Betsy's talking about on page 97?

The ones who hate-hate-HATED the book not only explained to me in great detail how much a) it sucked, b) I sucked, c) all my future books would suck, they confidently predicted my tailspin down the best-seller lists, followed by my head blowing up, SCANNERS style.

I'll admit: it was hard not to take some of that personally. SCANNERS style? Really? But...you don't know me. You've never met me. I'm not saying you wouldn't loathe me in person, just that...you've never met me! SCANNERS style? Not something a little gentler, like FRIDAY THE THIRTEENTH style?

So it was with no surprise at all that I saw the number of one and two star reviews by Anonymous and their almighty minions, the Anonymites. After all, it was explained to me many times last year how much a book you never read would suck, suck, suck. It must be terrific to have found you were right!

Right?

Also, good news! UNDEAD AND UNSTABLE will be out July 2012. So don't wait! Begin writing your reviews now, Anonymites.

Congrats on the new release! I was a little behind in my reading and just finished Undead and Unfinished today...which I loved! So thank you for the kick butt series and more books on the horizon. Yay! Can't wait to go get my copy of Undead and Undermined!
Thanks for the great stories and characters!

I'll read it anyway : D

As I said on an earlier FB post, I think it's great you took the characters we loved and gave them a new story. So many series get stale after a while. It's pitiful that people say such hurtful things about someone else's hard work. I'd like to see them try it. Those who can do. Those who can't criticize.

Fern said...

I'm sure its still as good as all your other books =) When will Undead and Undermined be out in the UK though?! I can't wait to read it!

NurseCona said...

Sorry but I was pissed that you killed off one of the main characters in Undead and Unfinished. Hoping that the new one Undead and Undetermined fixes this error. The rest of the series was awesome but I was sick after reading the last one. Not hating on you but wondered what you were smoking when you wrote Undead and Unfinished bc it was so totally out there that it seemed to be by someone else. Sorry got to be honest here.....GLAD I DIDN'T BUY IT BUT WAS BORROWED. Looking forward to the new one Undead and Undetermined. Love you dark humor bc I totally get it, but hoping and praying this one is better.

I have yet to find a book of yours that I don't like. Funny how people can give such scathing reviews "anonymously". Bunch of no balls wannabe writers is what they are!

Frankly, I like the turn the Betsy story has taken. I'm saving the latest book for my plane trip to Hawaii so I hope the rest of the passengers don't mind my laughing out loud while I read. :D

Party on MJ, party on!

I am looking forward to Unstable to see where all this wonderful drama is heading. I like the change of pace in the Undead series. The Betsy books have been great but we needed some change to keep them growing. Finally for all the Anonymites... (Thats my new favorite word) Anonymites suck!

Okay - I wasn't at all put off by the ending of Undead and Unfinished - Betsy just got back and hasn't had time to make changes to the future. I am fascinated by the alternative timelines story arc. Anyway - I'm looking forward to reading Undead and Undermined. I love this series and frankly it needed to be "shook up" a little so it wouldn't get stale - which you did very nicely.

As for Anonymous reviews - well I spit on them. Seriously - Anonymous? Are we not adults? Can we not stand by our reviews? What do they think will happen - that you'll send "Tina" over and she'll kick their ass? Grow up!

That's my opinion and I'll even sign my name - Teresa L. Luthye! Take that you Anonymous wimps!

I totally don't get the hating on Unfinished, I loved it....it did feel like the series needed a shake up, and I love the way you did it! Can't wait to get my hands on Undetermined...keep up the awesomesauce work and remember that for every anon there is out there, theres at least five of us who way outclass 'em :)

JudyWags said...

I am #4 on the waiting list for Undetermined. I only but paperbacks cause I'm cheap! I luv Unfinished. Change is good! Keep writing and give me some wolves to read about, it's been a long time since Derek's Bane.

WARNING: POSSIBLE TEENY-TINY SPOILER!

I, too, loved "Unfinished!" The ending had my jaw literally dropping, and that doesn't happen often. (Not because I'm jaded and cynical and nothing surprises me, but because my jaw is usually already hanging open in the "duuuuhhh" position.)
I just finished "Undermined" and am heartbroken. But in a really good way! IMHO, you are brilliant, and the series gets better and better.

I'm sorry about the Anonymites.
I love your books. I love to listen to them on CD in my car while sitting in traffic. I love it when I'm cracking up about something in one of the books, and look over to see the person in the car next to me staring like I've lost my mind. Love that. The Betsy series has helped me get through a tough year - my mom has been really sick for several months, and the constant stress and worry has been awful. Sometimes the laughs I get from your books are the brightest spot in my day. So thank you. And I'm sorry about the Anonymites, but they're obviously not Imeldas and they just don't get it.

Bev(QB) said...

Eh... opinons... assholes...

F@#k 'em if they don't even have the balls to use their names. Hell, they aren't even creative enough to make one up.

I refer to Unfinished as the "HOLY SHIT!! Oh no she di'int!" book. ;-p In fact it's one of my favorites of the series.

My only complaint, and it's not even your fault, is that I always have to WAIT for the audio books.(whinegrumblewhine) I need me some NANCY WU, dammit!

eidiliat said...

I like your books so much, I often re-read them. I still laugh at the funny parts and get misty on the sad ones. I'm just waiting till payday to get my Betsy fix. The end of the last book shocked me and made me get on the Internet to see when the next one was coming out. I trade them with my friends and both my daughters are also Betsy fans (Fred, too!). Don't let the anonymites get you down. You are an excellent writer!

Arwena said...

SO the thing I dislike most about the anonymites is that they give a book 1 star when they have either never read the book (shame on them) or they won't buy it because of the price (again haven't read it). How can you provide honest and accurate feedback if you have never read the book. I frequently want to post this on the book seller sites since I think they should monitor the comments. Unfortunately the world is full of self-important people who do not have the brains to realize they are making themselves look foolish. I love the Betsy series and enjoy them all. I freaked a little at the end of unfinished but once I read MJ's comments I couldn't wait for the next book. Keep on writing, true fans will keep on reading.

Cherie said...

There is only one thing that I didn't like about your new novel, and I must say it was a bit upsetting. You apologized for your last book! WHY? Never ever EVAH be sorry for your work, your art, something you worked damned hard to complete. WE just read the books...YOU write the books! It's your world, your baby, not ours. We enjoy your work, but in the end, it's what you are happy with, not us.
I, for one, will keep reading and enjoying your work. Thank you for writing these excellent books.

Loved the shake up in unfinished...I immediately called my friend Jeci, who insisted i start reading them(then Teri got me drooling over the others) I said OMG WTF have you read the new MJD...of course she hadn't (lame)she was in the hospital and had just given birth and was using that ol' story as a reason for not reading it...I told her to cry me a freaking river and get over herself and read the damn book already. I mean seriously what kind fan is she...her husband should have been reading to her through her Lamaze breathing, I mean if her husband was truly worth his salt... but whatever...she read the book (finally) and was like OMG WTF she cant do that...when is the NEXT GD book...So we were all good with the OMG WTF MJD...moment at the end and loved the stress of waiting and waiting and waiting for your next move... so now Undermined is out (yay!)....well played MJD well played!!!Jen Binford

I've read single QB book (along with the anthologies) and even though some hated the epilogue, I thought it was an amazing twist. Have to be honest here though, I thought Undermined (it's not Undetermined folks) was skimpny on the plot and character development. Betsy was always a little scatterbrained but she always eventually got there. I felt like in Undermined, she did a lot of whining and not her usual funny self, but the annoying, really annoying kind. I really miss the funny interaction b/t her/Sinclair. Even the interactions b/t Betsy/Jessica seemed lost. And I will sign my name. Maria Sivam
PS - Doesn't mean now that I'm done reading Undermined, I'm not now again counting the days until the next Betsy book - Unstable.

Anonymites = clucking chickens the lot of them.

Love the Besty books. Was very surprised by the alternate timeline business but looks quite interesting :)

Just waiting my turn on the library holds list. Impatiently.

Hi MaryJanice :)

About the Anonymous comments-
Jim Butcher on Twitter just said "It. Hurts. Anyway. Maybe I should have a thicker skin, but I have this weird condition where I give a fuck"

I love your humour & the characters you have created in all your series. Queen Betsy is my favorite though. The dialogue is some of the best I've ever read - and I've read thousands of books.

With deep appreciation for your creations,
Rob

First...thanks for using the word SUCK in your post MJ! (Take THAT Tracy!!!! - I get in trouble with Tracy every time I use that word on the Yahoo list and I use it ALOT!) Second, I LOVE all of your books! I'd say don't pay attention to Anonymous and his/her Anonymites but I know that's not possible! So, just pay MORE attention to those of us who love your books or even though who don't like them but have the balls to sign their names!

Really? If I don't like a book, I don't buy the next one. Period! I would never email the author to tell them all their hard work sucked. I was not happy the way a major author's stories have been going, so I JUST DON'T BUY MORE.

Tonette said...

I am a (c) on Unfinished, as you probably knew from my immediate comments; I haven't had time to get to the new one.Even if I wasn't crazy about your twists last time, I certainly can't imagine idiots saying that your work has forever gone south...hello? Did they read M,M&W???
Fools! Don't let 'em get to you,MJ. Love ya!

I love QB, to say i was shocked at the end of unfinshed, well thats a mild word for it. But I will not stop reading QB because I need to see how you get it done. I have the last one but i will read unfin. again before i start the next. I am going to have fath that all will be ok in the end. I have loved Betsey from the very begining! all the jerks out there who don't sign there name, who rate a book that they have not even read, well thier pretty sad people.

kfischer33@comcast.net said...

I finished Undermined in 2 hours yesterday. I too was stunned by Unfinished's epilogue. I haven't been that upset since Kim Harrison knocked off Kisten. I felt you took a brave risk to take the story line into a more involved direction, but it's time Betsy grows up, I guess. I was bothered by this book's ending for not only what happens to a great character but also that Betsy plans to handle her loss essentially the same way - she can't let him go. Also - how does it change things since she came back to an altered time line? Is it the same one or a parallel? Time travel books can be a challenge so I'm probably missing something. This may be too sci fi for some, but a neat twist for most.
I did enjoy the book, and I too read to avoid everyday yuck in my life, but Betsy seemed even more ADD than usual. The humor felt a little forced. I hope it wasn't to placate the boo hisses from the last book.
I have every one of your books, and even your teen dramas can take a dark turn but I do miss my HEA. That's why I started reading the Romance genre. I good author can throw it all in. I'm keeping the faith that you will find a form of HEA since I think Sinclair knows what is to come. Hasn't he read the BOD? Maybe it doesn't say how he is involved so there is so much to come. I don't know if my heart can take many more Stephen King type plot twists but at least I know they may be out there. I just hate the depression after losing a character you've fleshed out so well that they feel like a friend. Keep up the great writing. I buy these bad boys as fast as they get published. Even as jolted as I was last time, I pre-ordered the next book ASAP cuz I had to know more. Pretty sliok work.

You don't suck! And my opinions mean something dammit! Just because a story doesn't go the way the reader hoped/expected doesn't mean it should automatically get a bad review. What some anonymous reviewers need to understand is that it's YOUR story to tell, not theirs. I personally LOVE authors who rip my heart out, throw it to the ground, do a jig on it, and stick it back in my chest all squishy and full of holes. So write on!

Hey, MJD!

I just want you to know that while I prefer "light hearted" Betsy the Vampire Queen fair and am cautious about EVIL! Betsy, I want you to know you've brought me many hours of joy and I can't wait to read the rest.

You're great.

There's only one business in Hollywood: Build them up and tear them down. Welcome to the tear down phase of your stardom.
When you love a character the way your fans love Betsy, it's often hard to see the character change. We all need to suck it up.
For me, well I'll go back to the beginning and reread up to the last two. It's not you writing;(which is excellent) It's that I hate unhappy endings.

T. E. Cole said...

Under the cover of "Anonymous" even gutless wonders become bold. The ending of the last book was a bit of a shock but it was still a fun book and you're not done yet so I'm willing to wait. Just be sure and not blow up SCANNERS style until after you finish it. Better still, live happily and keep writing.

piewacki said...

I think your character Betsy is awesome! I don't understand why anyone would complain about change. I think it's wonderful how you have gave the character's a diffrent turn. It gives the characters more spark. If these readers want a happy perfect story where no one gets hurt or has a personality turn around, then they need to start reading adolescent vampire books. I think you are a wonderful writer and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your creativity you honor us with.

On behalf of the anonymous post I do not have an account with this blog site so I am always considered "Anonymous" Although I do always sign my post at the end. I hope that this is all right with all ya all. I did not care for the first book in this new arc in Betsy's story, but... it really helped that M.J. let the reader know at the beginning of this book that this arc is basically a trilogy within the series. It gives me hope that not only the ending in her last book can be resolved but some of the past sad spots can be altered too. I just finished your latest and am looking forward to how it will all be resolved in your next installment. Thanks for the laughs! Theresa B. (See I Signed it!)

Anonymous said...

I'm sticking with the "trilogy" within the series.

Just please don't turn into Laurell K Hamilton!

T. E. Cole said...

Well, I just finished the last book. Good job! I don't remember anything about a trilogy within the series, I just knew, when I finished the previous book, that it would certainly take more than one more book to clean it up when that particular #%&# hit the fan.

So MaryJanice, I find myself wondering: Are you looking after yourself? Are you getting enough rest, eating right, getting enough exercise, regular checkups? It's important that you look after your health and keep writing.

Yes, I care. I'm unselfish that way.

JudyWags said...

I just finished Undermined(sorry about my incorrect spelling in the past what can I say ... math major!) and I'm confused. Where are you going with this story line? Will all our characters slowly be killed off? Is there really any fun in that. I understand the need to keep a story line changing nothing is worse than the Stephanie Plum character that is still 33, still having wacky adventures, still doesn't know if Morelli or Ranger is the guy for her and after 17 books! Grow up already! But do now change the essence of your heroine like Linda Hamilton did to Anita Blake. She switched it up so much that a lot of fans bailed. I will be looking forward to 2012 and Unstable. Hopefully this will tie Unfinshed and Undermined together. I enjoy your writing(except Me, Myself and I ...YUCK). Get Busy.

Ditto on NOT becoming Laurel Hamilton!

(Can we say "Beating a dead horse"?)

I just wanted to thank you for writing the new book. I had thought that the previous novel was the end of the Betsy series. I can't even tell you how excited I was when I saw the new book yesterday which I promptly got!

rebeca cole said...

Well I just started the QB series - late to the game as usual- so I have no opinion on your latest books, but really - to be rude enough to trash your books and writing is just wrong. Guess they weren't listening when their moms said "if you can't say something nice, don't say something at all." You don't "owe" your readers anything in the same way your readers don't"owe" you by buying your future books. These are your characters, do what you please with them. I am enjoying the books that I have read and look forward to reading your other work.

I don't understand all the LKH bashers. She obviously didn't lose too many readers as her new books top the bestseller lists.

I love the new angle for Betsy. I can't wait to see how it all comes together in the end. Plot twists keep a series fresh. The next book may not end to everyones liking, but I am sure it will be an entertaining book. I am waiting somewhat patiently.

Ok first off I love your undead series your books always leave me wanting more but killing sinclair really why!!!!! And why does betsy need to become such a heartless bitch I hope young betsy finds a way to fix things im excited to ready your new books just I really pray betsy becomes a better person in the end

I love your books - all except the last two Betsy books. I am sorry to say they are really very poor quality and not at all what I have come to expect from your work. Not just the premise and endings (I can live with those) but the writing itself was bad. Both books were very confusing and very hard to follow. Betsy has had a complete and awful personality change and she's just not interesting in those two books. None of the characters are. I read them both because I want to keep up with the story, but it was hard to get through them.

So let me say this - YOU do not suck! Not at all! But those last two books? Yeah, not great at all.

Not ashamed to use my real name when telling my truth,

I din't read this Story all this years with joy just to learn that in the end she is an arrogant motherfucking butch who doens't care and doesn't Love anybody. I mean i looooved this Series sooo much. And like that it Beckmesser more thrilling but only if it turns um to be her in the end like wie know her. Even if i have to say that she was a littel much in her Head sometimes... ;) don't missunderstand..i like your Books. I Love them. Hi,

I don't know if you'll be able to answer this but do you know if there are any plans to have the UK cover for Undermined for paperback released here in the UK? The only one with the matching cover is an ebook, and the only paperback available is US cover (which I like, just prefer to have a book series matching on my bookcase). I desperately want to read it but am reluctant to get the US cover if the UK one is available.

Thanks!

If anyone can help would be much appreciated. Happy to import as that's how I have gotten some of my books before they were released over here... Cheers Tara
